John 1:2+3

The first phrase is a repeat of what came in the first verse to emphasize how important it is to know that Jesus was in the beginning with God. This is so, as the chapter moves on, the reader does not forget that Jesus was in the beginning with God. The reason this is important is that when reading phrases Jesus uses like “Son of God” or “Son of Man” it can be misunderstood that Jesus is below God, or was created by God, making Him not coequal with the Father. Jesus being in the beginning with God shows that He is coeternal with the Father.

After this reinforcement of verse 1, John shows that Jesus was not simply there in the beginning with God but everything that was made was made through Jesus. John reveals that Jesus was not just passive in the beginning but an active participant in creation. He then emphasizes this by showing the negative inverse of the phrase. This negative inverse of the phrase is to cover all bases that everything that is created was created through Jesus. In Hebrews 1:2 saying “…his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe” shows that God created all things through Jesus which reinforces the creative influence that Jesus had in the creation of everything. So, the conclusion can be that since everything is created then everything is created by Jesus—excluding God.

What this means for us is that Jesus is not a savior who does not know us because He is coeternal and coequal with God. These verses show the power of Jesus but also the weight of the sacrifice Jesus made as this is not the sacrifice of just a man but of God. This is a message to those who are not sure if Jesus knows about what you are going through or is strong enough to cover your sins. John shows us that He is because He was with God in the beginning and created all things and there is no one stronger than Him. To those who already know Him, do not run from His open arms. He is strong enough to cover all of our sins and bring us into a place where He can conquer all of our sins and troubles. To those who do not know Him He is calling you today to lay down your burdens at His feet. Jesus will take all of your burdens and sins and bring you into a new life with Him.
