More Than Conquerors

Romans 8:37-39

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We are at the culmination of the entire chapter, where all of the different concepts come together to form one fact, “that in all things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Paul is first responding to what he just asked in the last passage—can anything separate us from the love of Christ Jesus? The answer is an emphatic no. Paul points out the fact that in all things we are more than conquerors. A “conqueror” is an overcomer, someone who gets past the obstacles of the world. Also in the last passage, Paul talks about the struggles that could cause people in the world to lose heart and to fail. By saying we are more than conquerors in Christ, Paul is saying we do not just overcome the world and its problems, we are citizens of the conquering King with responsibility to share that love so others might experience the same. Throughout the rest of the chapter, we are shown how it is not through our power but through God’s power we do anything, so there is a natural reliance on Him to defend us when we are attacked. Paul does not want to belittle the position of a Christian, though, as is represented when he says we are “more than conquers.” This is not a description of who Christians Our identity as Christians is through Christ and His power and not by any power of ours as conquerors.

The task for us who are believers in Christ is to take up our call not to be easily swayed by the world and the way it reacts to situations in defensiveness but instead we need to be comforted that we are more than our conquests. We are people God has called to be His. We should not destress over lost battles over souls who actively reject God but take comfort in God that there is nothing which has—or can—overcome Him. We also take heart in the fact that if life is not going how we expect it to go, God is still the one there for us and He loves us. Nothing changes that fact, even heartbreak and evil people. God loves us and is for His purpose in our lives and that purpose is not just tasks and a to-do list but a loving relationship with the King of the universe through Jesus Christ. The greatest aspect of this love is nothing can separate us from that—not anything on this earth, or anything that is beyond this earth, even life or death. If that is true, then we cannot even be concerned with our own ability to make Him leave because even that is not possible. God is there for us, and we need to go in confidence that He Is guiding our path for what He wants us to do.

For those who are not yet Christians, there is still hope because God does not only love those who believe in Him through Jesus Christ. Jesus Shows us in John that God so loved the world that He gave His only son, Jesus, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). There is still hope. Begin your journey now with God by accepting Jesus into your heart. He will show you a new life, one where the worries of the world are nothing compared to His greatness. You do not have to fight and struggle; you can be more than a conqueror. You can also be adopted into new life in Jesus and have new titles such as child and citizen and friend.
