“On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with His disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’ 4 And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.’ 5 His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.”
The last passage we covered was the end of Jesus calling His disciples in the gospel of John, finishing off chapter one. This next chapter starts with a time jump. We will see multiple different jumps in John as it was not written in complete chronological order. We can see from the context, though, that this is sometime after Jesus has called His disciples because Jesus is invited to the wedding with His disciples. We can also note that this is sometime between calling His disciples and starting His public ministry as He tells his mom His “hour [had] not yet come.”
This passage shows a specific aspect of Jesus. John uses this passage to show—as he will multiple times throughout the gospel—the human nature of Jesus and the divine nature of Jesus in harmony. These first couple verses show His human nature. Jesus is going to a wedding in a city in the area where He lives. Jesus has been invited because He knows the people who are getting married. We also see His mother in this passage and they have a conversation that is another image of the human nature of Jesus. He is a man who has a mother and goes to weddings and has discussions with his mother—He even brings his friends to the wedding. At the end of the passage, though, we get a glimpse of something more because of what Jesus says and the response from His mother. He basically tells her that He doesn’t have anything to do with the very human problem of running out of wine, but her response is not to Him but to the servant. “Do whatever He tells you.” His mother knew Him well enough to know that He would make something happen. This is another instance of faith where His mother has faith in His ability to work a miracle reflecting at the calling of the disciples and the faith they had to follow Jesus in the first place.
As Christians, we get a glimpse of Jesus in everyday life and can understand that He was human just like us. At the same time, however, He is more than just that and this is something His mother knew. She had the faith to trust that He would know how to fix the problem of the wine at the wedding. This might seem like a silly issue, but it was one that was extremely important to His mother and because of that she does not hesitate to put her trust in Him, and we should be the same way. We might think our problems are small, but we should never hesitate to bring them to Jesus. We can only trust in Him if we know Him by walking with Him through prayer and reading the Bible. This will bring us into a relationship close to Him where we can be unafraid to ask Him things like His mother did.
To non-Christians, Jesus does not disappoint and He does not get angry with the things we ask for. Jesus just wants you to come and lay your burdens on Him. Come to Him, give your life to Him, and ask Him to fix it because He will.
