Let’s Get Insulated

Before we worked on our insulation, we wanted to complete boxes for our wheel-wells. These will be under our bed eventually, but for our big trip coming up at the end of July, we will need to utilize them as seats and storage.

We decided to use 3M Thinsulate for the insulation in our home-on-wheels. The 40′ x 60″ roll turned out to be the perfect amount for excellent coverage. We used 3M High Strength 90 Spray Adhesive to attach the Thinsulate when needed. A lot of spaces didn’t need glue like the spaces behind the structural support framing.

We figured out quickly that it was better if I cut the pieces. Thomas struggled to keep his cuts straight, but he was great at measuring and gluing. It was nice to have a project I felt I could work on confidently without help. I was able to get a lot of the insulation done while Thomas was working!

The large panels were pretty easy to finish up, but feeding the strips through the supports was more work intensive. Still, we finished up the whole project in just a few days. It has made a great difference in sound reduction alone. The temperature is still not necessarily comfortable, but we won’t die! An uninsulated van would bake us in the 100 degree weather we are facing here in Tucson.

Our home is really coming along. It is exciting to see it taking shape. Next up is our flooring installation!
