I am going to pause the Bible studies this week in reflection of Mother’s Day. The next couple of passages in the Bible study, Paul will be talk about being adopted by Christ and heirs along with Christ for those in the Spirit. In light of this I think it is important to reflect on motherhood during Mother’s Day. Obviously, me not being a mother, I do not have much room to speak of the trials and tribulations every mother endures but I’d like to contribute a general reflection about positive mother figures in my life and emphasize the fact that motherhood, like every other aspect of life, is enhanced with a real relationship with the Creator.
First, I have to say that I would not be the man I am today without the mother who bore me, quite literally, but also in my Christian walk. My mother was always there encouraging and inspiring me in my walk with Christ. helping me to make sure I am not just an upright man but also one whose heart is after God. I know from her example there is a self-sacrificial love that comes with being a mother but also an ability to stand firm and guard the heart of her children against evils they may not see. I also have the example of my sister as a mother to a wonderful little girl who has shown me that even through diversity a mother has the strength to stand firm rooted deeply in the faith of God. She has taught me that anxiety can be conquered by the cross and motherhood is not about being a saint but about the ability to continue to grow and learn. Motherhood, I have learned from these examples. is the strength to adapt to ever changing circumstances while being rooted in a deep love and faith for Jesus. The last example of motherhood I would like to reflect on is the mother in waiting for God in His time to become a mother, specifically, Caiti. My wife has shown me all the attributes of motherhood and something men have a hard time grasping which is preparation. I will deal with it when the time comes mentality, but she shows me how God rewards those who faithfully prepare for His blessings. There are many mother’s in waiting or mothers to be this is a time to prepare your hearts to pass on the most important gift that of the Spirit of God through sharing Jesus with your kids.
This brings me to my last point and a point that Paul has been making in Romans chapter 8 that without God it is impossible to be the mother you were made to be. This is like anything else in life, but it bears repeating, the Spirit is life and brings life–the only true life–through Jesus. I would make a plea to all those mothers out there who have not yet decided for Jesus, choose life today. He is waiting and calling and wants to show you a better way. All of the examples of mothers in my own life have had one thing in common: they are women of Jesus. those whose first love is Jesus and then their kids because they know that is the only way they will truly be able to show life and love to their kids. They have been great inspirations to me and I pray that every mother out there has a great and happy Mother’s Day.
